POLITICAL.
(BY TEIEGBATH.) (FROM OUR SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT.) Wellington, October 7. Ministers are gradually moving into the Ministerial residences. Sir Julius Vogel took possession of the Tinakori Road house yesterday, vacated by Mr Mitchelson. With reference to the statement telegraphed you to-day'to the effect that a round robin, signed by about 40 members, had been addressed to the Premier praying that Parliament shall be prorogued about the 24th of this month, the Post of this evening says:— ,f An extraordinary petition is being hawked about the lobbies of the Honsn for signature by Mr J. Holmes. It is addressed to his Excellency the Governor, and its prayer is that he | may be advised to_prorogne Parliament at] no later date than the 24th inst. We be- ] lieve that there is not the slightest foundation for the rumor that the step of Mr Holmes has been inspired by the Government, but that, on the contrary, it was conceived by Mr Holmes solely, who has acted on his own responsibility." From a return presented to-day, it appears that during the three years ending 31st March, 1884, a sum of L 56,000 has been allocated for roads 'on goldfields in the colony, whilst L 38,096 has been ex-
It is rumored this morning that the North Trunk Line Railway Committee had come to a decision, and that their recommendation was in the hands of the Premier. This, I have ascertained, is quite incorrect. The' Committee met this morning, and will meet again to-morrow morning, when they will probably come to a decision. The recommendation will almost certainly ba in favor of the Central route.
The Select Committee have returned the Westporfc and Greymouth Harbor Bills, their report-, in effect, reducing the amount to be borrowed in the case of Westport from L 500,000 to L 150,000, and, in the caße of Greymouth, from ,L 250,000 to LIOO,OOO.
