The Pope, it is said, has been informed that an Kngiish lady who has for some years allowed his Holiness L4COO per annum, and who died recently, has bequeathed to his Holiness a sum of L 50,000. A correspondent of The Times gives the following account of a visit to one of the famous wine cellars of Rheims :—" Tbis city is one of the wonders of Europe by reason of its dral-like cellars. Starting recently to those of Messrs George Goulet and Co., I soon found myself wandering through five acres of arched space, which may be accepted as samples of the other best cellars in Rheims. These wondrous excavations we:e made to supply ballast, &c., in the buiding of the ancient city, and the old workmen got out as much chalk as they could without burying themselues. Working scientifically, the excavations became domes, cloisters, and passages, and formed a subterranean city, roofed in chalk. The streets of these cellars were thickly populated with 2,000,000 inhabitants in the shape < f bottles, and 200 to 3000 great casks of wine, some of which I noted was branded ' Coronation,' as Messrs George Goulet and Co. had this season supplied the wine to the Russian coronation feast."
