A NEW GOLD FIELD.

(BT TELECKAPII.J WASGAsn, March 19. The question of opening up a goldfield in Tuhua county is causing considerable stir in town just now, the matter having been re-opened- by news from the natives that fresh gold had been discovered. The land is the property of the natives, who in the past have been strongly opposed to Europeans going there, though gold was known to exist fit many years. Now, however, Major Kemp states that the upriver chiefs are agreeable to let Europeans prospect, and that they promise to assist in every way. Apublicmeetinginconsequence has been called to consider the matter, as Government, who have been communicated with have not sent any reply, and a committee has been appointed to draft resoln(ion3 and put something definite before the public. The adjourned public meeting wa3 held to-night, and fully 400 were present. A sub-committee placed the result of their effort* before the meeting, and it was agreed that it was desirable to send a prospecting party to Tuhua, and also that it was desirable to form a prospecting company to carry out the proposals. Major Kemp wa3 present, and stated that the up-river chiefs were quite agreeable to a party going at onco, and suggested that the party bo sent to-mor-row to meet the chiefs at a big korero, to be held on the 23ch inst., at Karauiti. A full consent could then be given., and a party proceed to the spot where gold is alleged to bo found. A company having a capital of LSOO in 500 shares of LI each, with os a share paid up, has been formed to give the affair a start, as it is thought that if gold is discovered it will be a good thing for the district; and 270 shares were taken up in the room.
