RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
THIS DAY. (Before T. W. Parkrr, Esq., R.M.) Patrick M'Clusker was brought up on remand, charged with assaulting liis wife on the 7th inst. Sub-Inspector Smith prosecuted. His Worship remanded the prisoner till next Tuesday, to allow of tho attendance of Dr. Garland. John Johnson (Waitaki) was charged with a breach of the Licensing Ordinance of 1865, by selling liquors in an unlicensed house. The defendant is the landlord of the Waitaki Bridge Hotel, and had erected a temporary refreshment room for the convenience of railway travellers some distance from his hotel, and therein dispensed liquor. Mr. O'Meagher for the defendant. The offence wfts ad-, mitted. The Bench said that ths benefit* conferred on the public were outweighed by the amount of money m,a,de by himself j he therefore fined the defendant in tho sum of L 5, Mr. O'Meagher stated that ho had lieen many times asked by porsonn on tho train whether there ttm a refreshment roam at Qamaru, and had been obliged to say there waa not. Ha (Mr. O'Meagher) wished what he said to be made public, he thought it waa a disgrace to the railway authorities that thero was not even a varandah at Oamaru to shelter male passengers. John Orr, was charged on the information of the Inspector of Nuisances, with having put up a stack of hay within 30ft of a fence, contrary to the bye-law. His Worship fined the accused 20s. The following persons were fined, on the information of the Inspector of Nuisances for allowing cattle to wander: —John Lennie, 1 cow, 10; James Tropp, 1 horse, 10s; Mrs. Black, 1 cow, 3a ; Mrs. Restell, 1 cow, 3s; John Gregg, I cow, 10s.
