BATTLES FOR OTHERS
THE quiet smile, the cheery >vord, the helping hand. These are the at -
tributes that have made ' E. J. Phelan one of the most popular men m Auckland.
A battler for better conditions and more wages for his fellow-men, he has held for some years the position of secretary to the Timber Workers' Federation
A quiet sense of humor — and that tempers a natural pugnacity — has tempered his nature sufficiently to accept his industrial victories with modesty and his defeats wi t h ov t abiding bitterness.
How he finds time to sleep after the demands that the Auckland City Council, Patriotic Association, Transport Board, Football League, Athletic Association and many other bodies make on his services is something- of a mystery.
