\ MARRIED WOMAN'S MEAN ACTION ! HER WARNING (From "N.Z. Truth's" Christchurch Rep.) The story of a young married woman's scheme to supplement her ; income by an ingenious method , which subsequently earned for her ' the censure of the law, was unfold- ; ed before Mr. E. C. Levvey, S.M., ! m the Christchurch Police Court. ; DECOMING, friendly with a Miss ' ' Alexander, with whom s'rie worked, ( Florences Maud Lovell attended a clearing sale conducted by a city retail establishment. 1 Miss Alexander permitted her to pur- ' chase a pair of gloves on credit and ' place them on Miss Alexander's ■ mother's account. ; This privilege was abused by the | accused who purchased material, ■• • valued at £9, with which she hoped to make garments and sell them, thereby earning a little extra money m her spar© time. But when Mrs. Alexander received her account she disputed it with the ' firm and a complaint was made to the police. A charge of false pretences ' was later preferred against Mrs. Lovell. Mr. M. J. Burns, who appeared for \: her, pointed out tiiat she was either unduly optimistic or else very foolish, 1 since she worked alongside Miss " Alexander and had become very friendly with her. The value of the goods had been repaid except £1/11/-. Lovell's marriage had been an : unhappy one, Mr. Burns stated, and ;. she had to plough a lonely furrow which probably accounted for three ; previous convictions having been ' recorded against her. "You need something to waken you up to a sense of your responsibility," j commented the magistrate when he j ■ convicted the accused and ordered her i to come up for sentence within three months. ' The court directed that during that • period she should remain m the Salvation Army Home.
