SUMMER HAS A TURN
Rangers Fail To Stay Distance (From "N.Z. Truth's" Christchurch Rep.) 1 A surprise was effected on Saturday when Sumner defeated Wes-. tern, taking the beaten team's position, third, on the Christchurch Soccer ladder. . THE seaside team has shown a great improvement of late, and their success was not a matter of chance. Though lacking finesse the - forwards are a good lot and have worked up a fine combination. M. Peterson arid H; Stoneman played well together. \. Once within shooting range Stoneman is very dangerous, and' his shots are har-d to stop. He scored his side's three goals on Saturday. A much improved player is F. Bell, the outside left. E. Allen, full-back, and R. H. Neville, half-back, were two Sumner players who did -not allow much to pass them;-' ■ ■ ■ • ■ The defensive play of W. Whittington, one of ■ Western's full-backs, saved his side oh a number of occasions. "Whittington is a solid bustler, but his placing after he clears is very erratic. : G. Roberts, centre-half, was always m the picture, liis placements for his forwards always, being sure. ' : The Western 'keeper, G. Colville, . is recognised as one of the best custodians m Canterbury, and on Saturday, he was on h is game. : With the score three all a .short time before the end of the/Technical Old Boys - Rangers match, play became very exciting, both teams having turns at attacking., Later,: Cawtheray found, the net and won the match for Technical... . ■', . ; AH through the game Cawtheray was dangerous, and on a couple of occasions he narrowly missed scoring. He was well supported by Gbode and Jolly. . Frazer and Sloan were prominent m a number of Rangers attacks, and Forsy, the and Lees played sound defensive .games. Kaiapoi suffered its. first home defeat of the season, going down to Thistle to the tune of four goals to two. Playing for the Scotsmen was Trotter, a.centreforward, who has represented Canterbury for years, and who has not played previously this season. His experience and ability proved a. big asset to his side. New Brighton, were not hard put to it to defeat St. Albans by four -goals to one, the combination of/ the forwards deciding the match m their favor.
