Mantell Is Certainly No Miser (From "N.Z. Truth's" Dunedin Rep.) Living on his employer's money for eight weeks and spending at the hectic rate of over £30 per week spelt disaster for Henry Mantell, an employee of the Lotus Glass Company, Dunedin. MANTELL was last week put away by Mr. Justice Sim for three years with hard labor for the theft of £254 from his firm. Mantell, a smartly-dressed Englishman of 37 years, arrived m the Dominion eight years ago and soon found himself m financial trouble. The misappropriation of £100 on that occasion resulted m his detention by the State for a period of twelve months. Since then Mantell kept clear of the police and for the last six years enjoyed a happy married life. In October last he secured a position with the Lotus Glass Company and gave such satisfaction as their Timaru manager that he » r as promoted to a responsible position m the firm's Dunedin office. A penchant for liquor and a failing for backing slow racehorses resulted, m the dapper little Englishman going beyond his means and £250 of his firm's hard cash was spilt m this direction m eight weeks. Penniless and unable to make restitution, Mantell presented a sorry picture when he appeared last week for sentence.
