Let Us Be Joyful
■ ♦ THE doleful cry of Uio pessimist raised m Avoe and lamentation over the supposed (iniuu-inl stringency and the adamant, conditions prevailing m the .Dominion should take on a more cheerful note when the actions of the citizens of Wellington are considered m the light, of passing round tho hat towards the alleviation of unemployment. Within the short period of two months, nearly ten thousand pounds have been contributed as evidence of the willingness of residents to lend a hand to others not so fortunately placed. That this huge sum of money should be voluntarily contributed is surely evidence of man's humanity to man, and the prevalence of much loose change m the pockets of at least a large majority of the people. In a lesser degree, what has been done m Wellington has been done m many other centres of New Zealand. < Unemployment is a recurring social condition and although the numbers of jobless men have been high during the winter months, no pardon can be granted the archpessimisms who have seized upon this state to tell the world that New Zealand is m the Slough of Despond. Phases *of commercial depression are as transient as the passing showers m spring. Notwithstanding the blah! blah! of our captains of industry and the tired bleat of agriculturists to the contrary, this paper advocates the universal adoption of the slogan--: "Smile, smile, smile." The contribution of Wellington Residents to its Mayor's Unemployment Fund can be taken to heart and considered cheery and optimistic, and a blow m the midriffs of the doleful gentlemen whining of hard times.
