A little lemon juice diluted with water will keep the complexion white. It should be applied with a soft cloth. # * * Useful dish- mats can be made with odd pieces of linoleum cut into shapes and slipped into . embroidered covers made to fit them. * « • Cakes should be baked as soon aa they are mixed. •• • * Potatoes will keep a good color if a few drops of lemon juice are added to thS water m which they stand after being peeled. Test the oven before baking — don't guess. * * * . A paste made from silversand and kerosene will remove all marks from tiles. • '■■ *- •/ Always bake jam tarts m tin plates. When cooked they should be slipped out and tilted so. as to allow the steam to escape, otherwise they will become heavy. ♦ * • Always mix pastry with a knife. It will be much lighter than if mixed with the hands. * * * Sand and hot water will clean wooden shelves or benches better than soap. ■.* •■••■. French chalk and lemon juice will remove stains from marble. * * * To prevent corks sticking m ' the necks of bottles etc. rub them with a little glycerine. ■ ' # * ■■»■-■• •■. A polishing mop may be thoroughly cleaned by boiling it m water containing a handful of soda and a tablespoon of kerosene. *•■ . • Save old pieces of velveteen as they make excellent polishers for glass and metal.
For a dish that is to be eaten cold never use mutton suet. • .■ # • Boiling hot salt and water is the best thing for flushing drains. • * * Luke-warm water and the yolk of an egg will remove coffee stains. •' ■ *. *. ■ * Never Iron colored ' materials with a very hot iron as it helps to' fade the color.
