PIRATES AHOY!

Marist Withstand A Heavy Attack (From "N.Z. Truth's" Wanganui Rep.) Saturday's Rugby championship games at Wanganui resulted: • Kaierau 16 v. Country 3; Pirates v. Marist 6 all; and .Old Boys 12 v. . Tech. Old Boys:0. l/AIERAU did not get their strongest *T team away to Fordell to play Country, but they had little difficulty m winning: the superiority of their forwards being the deciding factor. v Boulton, Glengarry, Carroll and Haines were prominent for the. winners, while Hemold and Phillips were the pick .of the Country players. . The Pirates — Marist. clash was ex 7 pected to prove a, hard one, and it fulfilled all expectations. ; The play was fast j\nd furious, with thrills a-plenty crowded into the concluding stages of the battle. It was a ding-dong struggle, each side scoring m turn and when the whistle. sounded the board read 6 all. The play was , hard — very near the border-line on many occasions — and the crowd was continually on its feet as first one side and then the other made desperate efforts to score. It was not brilliant Rugby, but it was exciting-. • The Pirate forwards played with their old-time vim and dash and never let up once. Jackson again was the best forward on the ground, but Ross, Anderson and Barnes also did great work. Wakeling was the pick of the Pirate backs and he played right up to rep. form. J. Duncan, behind the scrum was also m splendid form, while Potaka showed that he is as tricky and 'clever as ever. Cutelli was the outstanding forward m Marist's fifteen, but the others all battled hard. The Marist backs were all sound, the pick being T. Jones, W. Jones, Vangioni and Darby. They were very solid, both m attack and defence. "Mick" Darby, playing as wing threequarter was at the top of his form. He scored a try which was one out of the box. Such a fast, determined runner and 'fine tackier should be played oh the wing m the rep. team. Narby played well at full-back, kicking and tackling with judgment. F. Crotty, at half, was solid. ■ '„
