POTTER'S PART
A SOLID spoke m the Reform wheel is Vivian Harold Potter, M.P., for Roskill. With one brother mayor of Mt. Eden, another brother chairman of the Mt. Eden school committee and yet another member of the family officer commanding the northern military district—portion of Auckland can feasibly be said to be "m the hands of the Potter." "My policy is to be straightforward and conscientious, without playing to the political gallpry," is a statement of Potter's that embraces his character as a legislator and a keen man of business. The Roskill member was born at Hamilton and when he decided to earn his own butter for his own bread, he went to Waihi. After some years of mining, during which time he proved a thorn m the sides of the strikers m. 191.3, the song which advises us not to' "go down the mine . . ." claimed him 'as a victim — so did politics. Potter has had a pot at soldiering, too. Two and a-half years at the Boer War were not enough for 'him, so he opposed Frit/5 for thr*ee and a-half. He is a strong advocate of the licensing of the "books" and State lotteries; m fact, mention any kind bf sport to him and you immediately capture his attention and his support. In his younger days the noble art of self-defence claimed the energies of his tall, well-set-up figure, but now a swing of a golf club 'is his outdoor tonic. "Ambition is the latch-key of success," is Pbfcter's motto — iand he has a skeleton patter-n.
