Otago's team for the New Zealand Swimming Championships at Auckland this month ranks as one of the strongest that has ever represented the province. fT includes one open'title-holder m Roy Calder, the present men's diving champion. He will meet with sterner opposition than usual, but is diving as well as ever this year, and good judges m the south confidently predict he will retain the championship. C. B. Lewjs will be Otago's sole . representative m the Men's National Championships, m which he will contest the 220 yards breaststroke championship. In Otago he is m a class by himself and won the provincial championship by about half the length of the baths m 3 minutes 25 seconds, which is New Zealand standard time. Otago's star performer will be seen out -An the junior boy's , section, Les Olds, the New Zealand 220 yards champion, being elegible m this ■clas's for two years yet. Olds, an elder brother, will contest the 100 yards intermediate breaststroke. . "■■ " . ' • His best time is- over. Bo. seconds, but he is expected to do' better iri the faster Auckland water. . Miss Kathleen Miller is looked upon as having a royal chance m the ladies* national championships; particularly over 220 yards and 440 yards." She did 2min. 57 l-ssecs. m establishing - the 220 intermediate girls' record m the championships at Napier last season, this being better than Piri Page's senior time. Miss Miller won the 220 yards m the -ptago championships by 15 yards, registering 2 minutes 54 seconds, and is expected to make a bid at Gwitha Shand's record. She will be N hard to beat m the 440 yards m which she has registered startling'times at trials.
