AQUATIC STARS TAKE TO WATER

Competitors m N.Z. Swimming Championships at Auckland

TT is recognised ■*■ that the northerners excel m this branch of sport and that Auckland is the champion province of New Zealand. In raiding the str o'.n gho 1 d of swimming the southerners realize that if they are to triumph, it will be necessary to have a full team of

speeders on the 30b. Right throughout New Zealand swimming circles the prospects of the various provincial teams are being discussed, and the merits of the individual members are being compared oh a time basis. If time counts for anything, then it certainly looks as though Auckland is going to be considerably weakened m the coming battle. Canterbury is out to do some "scalping," and the main hope is centred m D. Lindsay, who* performs well over all distances. Last week he chipped osecs. off the record for 880 yards held by A. Baird, Auckland, whom the- northerners reckoned to be practically invincible. ■ This record-breaking feat on the "part of a Canterbury performer just on the eve of the big meeting has caused a certain amount of trepidation m the Auckland camp, and Lindsay's efforts on the tour will be followed with great interest. y The Ladies Then there is ,Miss Miller, Otago, who is going to make a bold bid for the ladies' title. She is credited with 'being able to cover ..the furlong m less than 2.50. T In the Auckland tests Miss Piri Page, Australasian champion, did not do better than 2.56, so that a battle royal is promised between these two champions. Young Olds, Ot&go, also goes north with a reputation, and as victory goes to the swift, he has more than an average chance of catching the judge's eye at the finish. There is no certainty about the sprint events, and D.owsett, Wanganui, will have to be all out to hold the title. [ Wellington can serve up a "'peppery" lot m the short events, and the other provinces, including the "shialls" are likely to have a.high speed machine concealed m the tea'ins. Eorm .» ' ■ ■ - The team to represent Auckland at the forthcoming N.Z. , championship ' meeting has been chosen as follows:
