South Canterbury

Skinner And Beri Cups

(From "Truth's" South Canterbury Rep.) Saturday's games left 'Zingari and, Old Boys to fight out the finish for the Skinner Cup, and also for the Beri Cup. OLD BOYS chances are considerably strengthened by the fact that Ron. Stewart, .will, after an absence of several weeks m Australia, again don the royal blue, jersey. '■/ ■ Ron's services as wing-forward will be of invaluable assistance, to the Old Boy's' rearguard so far as opening up play is concerned. In their game with Celtic on Saturday, Old Boys were indeed lucky m coming out on top. Celtic showed surprisingly good form, but were considerably weakened by the absence of their skipper, Mason, Avho always causes concern to the opposition backs. The game was not productive of exhilarating Rugby. In the Old Boys' pack Gerard was outstanding, this, player having obviously regained his old form. Ledingha'm also played well, while Bassett and Osmers (who has recently returned from the West Coast) were also convincing. Victory to Old Boys was largely due to the work of Strang behind the pack, who gave his usual faultless exhibition. ' Lawson Bros,, and Tate, on the wing, were also prominent throughout. Boys, at full-back, was not up to standard. j Outstanding m the Celtic pack were Bergin and Flynn, who ' [ were "after" the opposing inside backs. Dwan, who seemingly, adapts himself to any position m the team, played well m the five-eighths line, while Fountain, on the wing, was. very safe and was responsible for many solo efforts. The Waihi — -Zingari encounter resolved itself into an "encounter," two of the Zingari men finishing up on the bank,, while others should consider themselves lucky ■ to see out two 45's. A ragged display resulted m Zingari ■Running out winners by a good margin. Outstanding m the Zingari pack until his enforced retirement, was N "Shrewdy" Ward, whose exceptional keenness, caused him to join the spectators. Hayhurst, after remonstrating with the referee, soon joined the former. The referee's timely action was re-, warded, by the powers that be, who found that "no case could be found a-gainSjt; the " alleged offenders." Individual efforts were lacking, the game developing into a pronounced melee, througliout. ":
