SWEEPSTAKES
An Auckland Move
(Prom "Truth's". Special Auckland. . , Reip.) . v .- : \ ' Will the introduction :of a 10- --' soy sweepstake for sta, rters ih the Railway and Easter . Handicaps have the effect of keeping the * "rough stuff" out of those important events? •THIS remains to be proved, but pro--1 bably it was some such idea that influenced the A.R.C. to make those races sweepstake .. events.-: As is well known the last Railway Handicap had to-be run m divisions with 26 runners m each division, while a field of 27 lined up to contest the last Easter Handicap. The additional £10 as a sweepstake may have some effect m doing away with the big field difficulty. If it does it would not be surprising to note the /northern racing, club going even further ne^t' I: yeur;;and placing'the sweepstake cdh.ditiori *on mother' ; ; 'im- ■; portant race's. - 'Who knows but that the sweepstake condition will not work wonders m the right direction? Sweepstakes are not entirely new m connection with New Zealand events, but it is many years since such a condition was attached to any of our races, It is a common ■ occurrence m connection with important events m Australia. ■
