IF paper fire screens are treated with a coat of transparent var r nish they will last longer ' and, keep cleaner. * * Never hang an oil painting over the fireplace, as it is apt to wrinkle with the heat. .' * # « ■ ■ ■ Always beat a carp et on the wrong- side first, and then more gently on the right side. Beware of using sticks with sharp points- which may tear the carpet. ' * * ' Straw mjatting and seagrass mats may be cleaned with a large, coarse cloth dipped m salt and water and wiped dry. The salt prevents the matting from turning yellow. * # Glass dishes and bottles that have become cloudy may be cleaned by rinsing them out with powdered charcoal.
