AFTER a good fight, Syd. Smiih "lc&t New Plymouth' to C. E. Bellringer. Bellringer was defeated by Smith m 1922, but the Bellringer party has never rested since, and its energy has now . borne results.
The adoption of pre-election fusion would have saved the seat for Syd; and perhaps that is one of the reasons why pre-election fusion did not come about. There were several Reform candidates who were determined to fight certain seats, fusion or no fusion. And New Plymouth may have been one of these.-
Anyway, Smith is out. He is the son of the E. M. Smith who for years held New Plymouth as a Liberal under Seddori.
Smith the elder nailed his colors to Seddonism and Taranaki ironsands. Smith junior, entered the House with Labor leanings. The, rosy color that Hollandism wore a few years - ago drove him to the Liberals.
