Hawkas Bay Happenings

(By "Demosthenes.") It was gratifying to see the two Dannevirke Clubs come out good winners at their recent meetings after such a bad run these last two years. # . * * Hastings horses played a prominent part m the distribution of the prizemoney, although one or two came as a surprise to track watchers. # * • Before going away Little River was responsible for a great gallop, but on account of having done similar gallops on other occasions without winning no one wanted to be on him. # # # Trainer Harry Green last season had a most consistent performer m Koodoo, and now that he has lost his services temporarily he is indeed fortunate m having such a substitute m Nancy Lee. # * # This little Lucullus mare m her last eight starts has been twice first, four times second, and twice third. # * * Mountain Echo failed miserably to run up to his track form m either starts, perhaps he is a little shy as yet. # * • As a brood mare Queen Lizzie, by producing seven foals m as many j years, all born m the first week of August, had something of a record, but by producing full brothers and sisters m Teiga and Killoch to run a deadheat is another. # # # The Dannevirke maiden, Penman, was made a hot order, but through lack of racing condition just succumbed to another localite ' m Peshwa. # * # Lady Joyce was the chat on Wednesday, but was not good enough on the day. # # # Hillation could only get third m the Hunter's Hurdles m a poor field. He is not fulfilling early expectations and may require further time. # . * ■ ■ # . Mrs M. A. Perry signalled her return to the turf with a dead-heat, which was most popular. Her other nomination, Christina, was never m the picture. # * ■ # Miki Thomas will have himself thoroughly tried out m getting another turn out of Tari, the old bulldog is no longer a good proposition. # * * The Napier Park spring meeting on Saturday should, on present prospects, be the most successful that the club has held for some time, and this club can well do with a turn-up. # * * "With one exception the two-year-olds engaged are of an unknown quantity. On track form tlfty have shown to bo nothing out of the ordinary. # * * Kilmoyle ran second at Wanganui recently and with that little experience and form should be the best punt of the day. #« # ■ Mr J. A. McLeod's Beth can step for a while, but as yet can hardly see out the five furlongs. She will mark the first occasion m this district that a Joculator has been saddled up. # . # * Little Rivor m the Hack Hurdlp'j, on account of recent form, will carry a ton of money, but who can say how long it will be before he is m the same good humov again as he H*as at Dannevirke? # # * Toa Taua has improved a lump since racing last week, and if Harry Burt allows him to bowl along will take a power of beaming. # # * Good Mark's Manawatu form points to him having a. great chance. Being near home is a big thing m his favor. # * # Penman was very big at Dannevirke, but with that race into him it will take something out of the ordinary to lick him m the Maiden. Waitaunaha ' is a really good sort, but has not raced J for some time. Even then he will m,ake Paddy Neagle's colt do his utmost to beat him. 'Tis evens he will getithere first for the principal handicap. # # * The prize is not very rich, but nevertheless a good acceptance makes the event most interesting. # * • ,# Dazzling Light, the full sister to a host of good 'uns, has yet to win a decent race here.. # * * General Carrington of late appears to have lost his freshness, and as the going promises to be on the solid side he is more than likely to take on the open hurdles. • * *■ * Kilceit has always run well on this track, and on form might pop up. # * * Mime is going to carry a lot of money m the six furlongs Hack despite the Gisborne-owned Sunlike's reputation. The track is m favor of the Absurd colt. # # * If there was a guarantee that Purse Proud would leave the barrier with the field he would be a good investment, but with him a punter has to take a big risk. #> # # Peshwa's racing recently has done him a lot of '- good, all the same these hacks have a little do much toe over six. # * # If Highway should get lashed m the open hurdles then what is the use of backing class. # « * Last season Merry Singer gave every promise of developing into a tip-top hurdler, but only m receipt of six pounds from Cuth Morse's horse is too big a hurdle. , if * * At present Sunray, who has not raced for some considerable time, will make his reappearance at this meeting. He wants a race or two yet. # * # Runnymede is m the pink. The Railway Handicap, with Jack .Barry m the saddle, is going to see him knocking hard, and the want of a race might beat him. # * * Another three-year-old m Shirley is very forward, and if it was a furlong less would be a cert. . # * * Should Barrier be reserved for this event he will be the only one to have a chance with the three-year-olds. # * * What will Teiga pay m the County Hack for first? Some hot favorites have won this, and on Saturday there should be another. *■ * * To every rule there is an exception, and if there should be one m this event you can spell his name "roadhog." ## • * Crown Coin, who ,has been off the scene since the slimmer, has done a lot of work, as well as schooling. Be with him at Hastings. #. * * That good horse Gaze is back again at % Harry Green's, and to all outward appearance has made a complete' recovery from his ailment if musclesoreness. *'' * # ' Since the fine, weather set m 'tis pleasing to report there is not the mortality among brood mares and foals m this district that was reported a few weeks back. At the pre r sent time around the Hastings district there are many sires (all imported) at the services of breeders, but all at a high figure.
