High Cost of Love

London is congratulating itself on the reduction m number of divorces listed for hearing. ~ THE comforting, fee'ins this news induces (writes Sydney "Truth") is mixed with a suspicion that • all is not well with the 'divorce law m the old land. .' The high cost of loving is nothing compared to the high cost of punishing the lover who loves not wisely but too well. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, head of the Divorce Law Refoi'm Society, states that there are over 1,000,000 couples m England who are compelled to live unnatural lives because the high cost of divorce- proceedings prevents them from securing their freedom. Many hundreds of these unfortunates, tired of waiting for the cheapening of the cost of divorce, eventually lose their patience m disgust, and take illegal partners. This fact- partially explains the great increase . m the illegitimate birth-rate m Great Britain. It also has the effect of discouraging marriage, as young'people, seeing the terrible plight into which an unhappy marriage may thrust a couple, with little prospect of breaking the galling bonds, remain single..
