FIRST NIGHT

FLYWEIGHT ' A. Ennis, 7st 101 b (Christchurch), bea.t X Emson, 7st 61b (Auckland). Winner employed a good right hand: had his opponent down twice m first round. Emson showed courage that was worthy of any Briton. S. Purton, 7st 91b (Grey) . beat C. Pearcey, 7st 21b (Napier). Quite an interesting bout; both boys were willing, and Purton just shaded his opponent. ' ' ' BANTAMWEIGHT W. Weston, Sst (.Timaru), was awarded contest over W. Davey, Bst lib (Christchurch). Up till time o£ referee's intervention contest was very tame, there being too much wrestling. Towards close, Davey injured bis right hand, and the referee stopped the bout. It was quite a wrong action, as. Davey, though his hand was out

of action, was capable of going on. And he was leading on points, too! ' F. Nesbitt, Sst lib (Wellington), won by default from W. A. Parker (Otago). FEATHERWEIGHT, M. Carroll, 9st (Wellington),* was given the decision against J. Smith, 9st (Frankton). Carroll was lucky, for Smith undoubtedly won. The judges 'disagreed, and the referee decided. It was a fight all the way, with Smith, with the exception of round .three, always doing the better. Smith is one of the best boys seen for a long time. • T. Donovan, Bst 81b (Napier), defeated J. Colledge, Bst 131 b (Waihi). Donovan is one of the worrying type who revels m hard punching. His ; opponent showed he could box, but somehow he failed to use this, his strong point. L. Black, Sst 101 b (Christchurch), K.O.'d A. Worthington, Bst 101 b (Timaru). Black had most of the say, and he put Worthington down m the final round. It was not a hard punch, but the count was called all the same. T. "Griffiths, Bst 81b (Dunedin), beat A. Keiley; Sst 31b (Greiy). "Truth" has never had the pleasure of watching such a ; pretty exhibition of boxing as these two lads provided. It was absolutely a gem. Griffiths was just a little too fast, his double left ha*nd troubling Keiley. The loser has improved wonderfully since last year and is a champion m the, making. Both lads fought m such a clean and pretty manner that it was an education to all concerned. The referee never spoke a word during the whole contest, and, as) he said after, it was the greatest exhibition of clean breaking it ever had been his pleasure to contr ° ! " LIGHTWEIGHT W. Colledge, 9st 121 b (Waihi), beat R. A. Argyle,, 9st 101 b (Ashburton): The long and short of it, Colledge had

the advantage oE height and reach. The winner used a big variety of punches, his right uppercut being the best. E. Morgan, 9st 131 b (Wellington), beat J. Rodda, 9st 121 b (Blenheim). The P3.ir fought like professionals, whether it was at long range or m close. Morgan was always the winner, his left rip to the body troubling Rodda. There was a lot of in-fight-ing, and this spoiled the contest to a great extent. All the same, it was a hard fight, and the finish found • the pair well covered m gore. R. Fulcher, 9st Sib (Dunedin), won by default from. S. Martin ("West Coast). , v WELTERWEIGHT J. ■ Paull, lOst 21b (Southland), beat F. Gordon, lOst 71b (Napier). Paull was too calm, and clever for Gordon. The winner was too apt to hit with the open glove, for which he was cautioned repeatedly.

R. Loveridge, lOst 81b (Wellington), beat A. Thompson, lOst 71b (Christ-* church). Loveridge is not the Loveridge of last year. He is inclined to think he is a boxer now, instead of a fighter. Thompson has improved, and all things considered he gave' test year's light champion a good fight. MIDDLEWEIGHT C. Pocock, list (Ashburton) K.O.'d G. Gordon, lOst 111 b (Napier). It was a very ordinary contest. In the third Pocock caught Gordon, who was coming m, on the jaw, and that was the end. C. Gardiner, list lib (Christchurch), beat J". Broadfoot, list (Waihi). This bout was fought at a very fast clip, and there was very little between the pair at the finish. C. Martin, lOst 121 b (West Coast), won by- default from F. Padget (Southland). W. Steevens, lOst 81b (Napier), won by default from W. Satherley (Wellington). , . LIGHT-HEAVYWEIGHT This section was one long list of defaults. Evatt (Wellington) and Mora, /who were drawn together, failed to appear. J. Garvey (West Coast) won by default from J. G. Leckie (Otago). R. Fitzsimmons (Wellington) won by default from G. Barwick (Gisborne) . D. Mitchell (Frankton) won from C. Pocock (Ashburton) by default, as. did Yin. Parker (Napier) from B. Hooper (Wellington).
