South Auckland Scratches

(By "Quin Abbey.") " Archeen wants a race or two to top him off. *i 4£ *& Pinon is one of the latest of M. J. Carroll's team to line up for track duty. « * * Te Aroha had it all its way when Highflown and Ring Potoa fought it out at Trentham. *•* ' * Prince Rufus will be sharpened up by the two races the King Rufus gelding had last week. * « * Arsene Lupin can be kept m mmd if he goes to Fending. ■ * • • .. ' Alfort has been vp # for some time, but he has not been asked to go with the colors up. * . # * Waikato stables will be well represented at Feilding next month, while

several horses from these parts will also sport silk at Wanganui. * * * Mr. W. P. Russell is the new handicapper for the Waikato Hunt this season. * « * Gold Jacket will be seen out at Avondale next month. He has been getting- plenty of work since being transferred to Te Awamutu. •& 3? %? Gay Comet was one of the best hacks racing round the country circuit last season. He ■ won a parcel of money, from the Rotorua . fixture, m February and onwards. As he is a good beginner and a determined finisher, the Day Comet gelding will continue to win races. • . * # * Glen Canny is working regularly at Te Awamutu. He has lost a lot of his punch, and is not easy to keep right these times, but a useful race ia not beyond him. * * * Ring Po'toa had hard luck m meeting a district companion capable of taking his measure art Trentham, but Paddy Eva's prad will not be long m getting his head m front. *' * * Wedding March is on the small side, but she is game and has the breeding from which to expect results. * # * White Comet gives indications that he will go two miles. Mr. Seifert has him entered m ths Avondale Cup, and if his form warrants it he will go to Riccarton for the New Zealand Cup. * * * Master O'Rorke has been a. consistent stake-earner, and promises to still keep on m company away from the very first class. The gelding will be on hand at Ayondale, where he is engaged over sprint courses. * ® * Capstar went amiss m the late summer, and was blistered and turned, out. His owner is putting the oats into the jumper again, and he will probably be ready to go over country at Claudelands and Te Rapa. . # * * Aberfeldy is not as good as Ripon ■Abbey, but the former is useful nevertheless. Ho will be out at Avondale. & '& *• Te Kara's nomination for the New Zealand Cup points to GeOrge Paul keeping the General L,atour gelding m commission on this side m preference 'to sending him across to Australia again. He is being worked at Te Awamutu.-' * * * Miss Ford has been expected more than once since she started racing last season. The mare does it well on the track, but fails to produce the goods when the colors are up. « * * Transformer won races m the spring last season, but he trained off after that, and it was not until the late autumn that he placed his backers m profit once again. He will be seen out next month, when he will be worth taking notice of. * * * Giolden Bubble is not definitely off the sqene as yet. Still he has lost a big measure of his pace, and every year makes it more difficult for him to win races. * =s* * York Abbey will reappear on the scene at Avondale. He won like a good one at Ellerslie m the winter, and it would be no surprise to find him getting a middle distance of ground this season. * * * Lucullent paid his expenses by the two seconds the Cambridge gelding: put to his credit at Trentham last ■week. He has done a lot of hurdling since the New Year, and a let up would be all to his benefit. *# . # King Lv won several races last season, but he was not easy to keep right. There is no doubt about his quality, and good races should come his way during the new term. * * # King Merv will most likely get some weight-for.-age racing » this season. That seems the best, line to adopt with the Quin Abbey sprinter, who is getting too high up. m the poundage now. * # .! # Ripon Abbey is down to race m the Avondale Guineas, and' Dick Hannon's three-year-old has only, to continue m the right way to give a good acI count of himself.

Regent will, all going well meantime, be produced early m the new season. j * * =* Dan Quin, after his sale at Auckland to close a partnership, was keenly inquired after by one would-be purchaser, who was willing to go to 1000 guineas. The' sprinter was labelled at 100 guineas above that figure. * * « Civility, Siaosi, and Mount Marta will probably represent Bert Russell at Avondale. «= * # Cureaform hasn't been asked to run out twelve furlongs, but there seems no reason to doubt that she would get it all right, as she has proved herself capable of seeing out a mile and a-quarter creditably.

Heisler is back on the tracks again after his unsuccessful visit to Trentham and Riccarton. The Lord Multifid gelding, apart altogether from the fact that heavy going does not suit him best, cannot hang on long beyond five furlongs. * « * Glenidle looked like earning more money m the South but for going wrong following . his success over hurdles at Trentham m July. However, Jack Hanks adopted the wise course m giving him ample time to get round again. Pad don has been entered m a race on the second day at Avondale, where he will have the higher scale of weights which will enable a strong horseman to ride him. * * * * Highflown's win at Trentham was shared m .by a' goodly number of Waikato punters. The gelding has been unlucky m some of his races, but the two wins and several placings m the two Trentham and the Riccarton visits will place his owner well on the right side of the ledger. *•' * * Peter Maxwell has been . under Frank Tutchen's charge only a couple of months, m which he has won three hurdle races, all on the Trentham course. There is no doubt that Tutchen knows how to keep a horse right when he gets him tuned up.
