THE FLEET MEETING

FIRST DAY'S RUNNING

■ ■ (By "Veritas.") Dull, overcast Weather was m evidence for ■ the- first day of the Fleet meeting. The track . was m fair order, considering the recent weather. Only a fair crowd was In attendance. Peter > Maxwell was always favorite for the Melville Hurdles and he won. He. was always nicely placed and coming away at the straight entrance landed. • Little- River, was thought to have a chance, but he went his usual dog of a; rac.e.. He may win m the near future; then again he may not. Askari had his first run since he Avas injured at Hastings m June. His third Avas therefore a good effort. . Six furlongs from home Fort George was going very-Avell, but he shut up like a book.t ...:'-.• Muzzle failed to : reproduce his Riccarton running- and Avas tolling aAvay m. the rear, most" of the journey. He did -not. jump too. well. Gluement is improving m his jumping and he should soon win a hack hurdle event. . • • - Puketoi broke some gear after going half a'milfe and had to be pulled up. As a neAV chum Waimana gave a good' display, the only fIaAV being a bad jump- at the last fence. F.ather .O'Flynn just trotted home m the Boston Trial Plate. He was never off the bit. Nadarino, was always just behind the winner, and he had to be kicked out : to. beat Nine' of Spades. ' The field bunched early, but once they entered on the course proper it Avas a procession. Birkenella has not a- great turn of speed on the flat but he can jump big fences. In the Richmond . Steeples he Ava's all right at fencing, but Avhen it came to speed he was a good second. For quite a time Bonny Rill has been :promising: to win a race, either a hurdle. or. a steeple event. She did on Thursday and Avon really well. The mare, however, .is not up to weight. Uncle Dave can go with the field for tAvo miles and then retires. He Avas there half a mile from home, but then he stopped. Sir Wai got into a,' fence and fixed one of his legs. His rider did not persevere Avith him long.

Olympic was. backed down to a very short price m the Maine Handicap, and he did not run into trouble like the celebrated battleship of that name. He lay m behind the leader till the turn and -then came through and won m a punishing finish. ■ ■ •■ ' BJack Rock had not .been up. very long arid by ' rupning such a good second he was far from disgraced. Anticipate was never within cooee. Running on the' top 'turn he was third to last, and to then finish fifth he did well.. . . ...... For six furlongs Sir' Moment made a very bold show, but_then wanted a rest.' -■■■•••••■■ . Mountain Top was a big disappointment. -She was made .-, to, cover .a lot of unnecessary ? grpund. Omahu' rah a very fair race m the Ludlow - Hurdles, 'eventually finishing fourth., Nukumai. was a. bit away, m the early stages but his splendid jumping gained hihr. lengths at every -■ fence and this counted :at the finish. . Running to the last fence Lucullent seemed to have a, show of heading Nukumai off but it was all m vain. 'Captain' Sarto Ava's' chasing the field along'all the way'but he was wanting a chair -at the -entrance to the straight. Master Peter had his first run since Ellerslie In June. He was never m the hunt, 'though ; going a fair' race. • The : distance and- the ground were not m favor of Maunga, who' was running 1 on at the finish. . - Tanadees gave a taste of his quality when he won the Seattle Handicap. It was, a Veal tip-top effort. Kilfane was .'ridden a peculiar race. Apparently he would not or could not keep. his place m the early stages, and this left him too much room to make up m the' end. The surprise of the race was the running of General Carrington, who put' up a courageous fight with the winner. The was beyond Passionate, who, nevertheless, was far from prominent at any stage. Of the other runners the only one to show to advantage was Lady Ben, who after making most of the pace, finished fifth. ••■••.• . Bob iKnox scored a win with Lady Fingers m the Nevada Handicap and "it wa's well deserved. •: The mare Avas always there and she won at the right end. Lucius,' after his Riccarton victory, was expected to do well, but he' never came into the picture. Tresham went an extremely good race, 1 - and -he -should -be kept m mind for the spi ing handicaps. • . Nancy Lee is not. a great weight carrier but she can gallop. Next month when .they revert to 1 the ordinary scale she should : pay her way. Merry Day looked very forward arid she should play an important part m the spring races, as she did last season. Orchid had his first race since beingbought by H. /Lorigan, arid he went well" .enough to be gone on -with, especialjy at. the smaller meetings. On looks there was nothing wrong with Archeen and he. ran a fair race, finishing m fourth berth. The punters left Hjghflown well alone m the Texas Handicap, and home he rolled. His price was a startler after his Riccarton running. Ring Potoa ran a great race and should soon be on the winning list. - The Southerner,. Forgery, carried all •the cash, ; and .she was always m the picture, to. finish third.
