HOCKEY

NOTES AND COMMENTS.

Congratulations to the Canterbury representative team upon their success m the Shield tourney. P. N.' Quartermain,' the Canterbury right*., wing, more than justified the selectors' confidence, and has been a greater success than was anticipated even by his most ardent supporters. Bert-Hore has come through the tournament with flying colors, and must.be pronounced as the greatest left half m the Dominion. In the Wellington A. match he! stopped Jacobsen all the way until the crack Wellington right wing was almost ' a passenger. P. Hill filled th,e centre-half position m- the, last three matches, and proved himself as a half of no mean ability, • . ■ : ' . ■ ' 'McDonald^ has also made a name for himself through. the week, and his fitness and pace enabled him to stay all the way. ' H. Ford, on the left wing, played brilliant games all through, and. sent across some fine centres. The New Zealand team proved too much for .the Australians m the* Test on Saturday, and considering that the Dominion players had had a strenuous week, their success is a remarkable achievement. No doubt the Australians are hampered by the heavy grounds, but after a month of similar conditions they should have put up a better fight; No doubt the team is far below Australia's best, and -is not . so strong a combination as that which toured the Dominion m 1922. However, the visitors are to be congratulated "upon their keenness and sportsmanship, and while m the Dominion they have earned the friendship and esteem, of every hockey player on account of their sporting qualities, both on the .field and off. The visitors play their final match at Carterton against Wairarapa on Thursday, and leave to catch the Sydney boat at Wellington. . They will surely carry away the best wishes of all hockeyites m the Dominion.
