V. D Evil and Compulsion
Judging from a number of reports,, the Christchurch medico who undertook to come out with lurid opinions as to 'the responsibility of women and girls m spreading a terrible disease (usually known the lettering of V.D.) has "struck a snag," or rather many snags, for his pathway, m life must be full of them at present.- As Mrs. McC,ombs remarked at a recent meeting of the Christchiirch Hospital Board, "remonstrances have come from; North Cape to the Bluff." Wellington certainly sent m its ; remonstrance, and a "pretty hefty!' one . at that. : ' Perhaps there will be a little more care .tajjeri m regard to public declarations J 'in the future; ••''but, the underlying mischief; of such opinions is; ; the;;mqre serious. .;.■•'• ' ; --' y : - 'The'. recently /published! decisions of the Government with regard : to regulations .QMrie before the Society for.. the
Protection., of Women, and Children m Wellington, which 'has reserved judgment. Other centres will' no doubt consider the matter with promptitude. 'The Protection has proved for 26 years that it has earnefl and deserved its name. One reason of its power and influence , is that it is fair, ready to hear both .sides of a question, and not hasty m judgment. This society, therefore, will make a pronouncement shortly. Meanwhile many of its members are bearing m mind the fact that the British Commission decided against any form of compulsion, and that the Commissioners' report contains much cogent reasoning.
