Found in the Fog

MANGLED BODY ON ROAD.

Tragedy Near Templeton

(From "Truth's" Christchurch Rep.)

Out of the dull pall of fog which hung over Christchurch and its environments one; evening last week, a car passed , through Templeton v and there is every indication that the vehicle was the cause of the death of Henry Kempthorne, a married man, the father of three children, Avhose mangled body was found on the rqadside. The police are seeking the driver of the car which was said to have passed along the road at a great pace.

Evidence at the inquest leads to the belief that the driver knew that something was wrong; A constable stated that the tracks of the car were about seven feet from the footpath on the left-hand side of the road going to Templeton. After having passed the body as it was found the car swerved back to its position on the crown of th 3 road and it was apparently going towards Templeton. There were other signs of swerving and there were indications of the brake having been applied. It was known that deceased had been a frequenter of the Islington Hqsel and before going home and on the evening that ho met his death had left the hotel about five o'clock. Deceased had a bicycle but it was picked up without having marks of an impact on it.

The question before the police now" is: Who drove the car if Kempthorne met his death as the evidence suggests? In a fogffy. murky night an accident might happen, but the track marks seem to indicate that the tragedy was the result of a car coming out of and passing into the fog. The moral duty of the driver is obvious. Inquiries are still being made.
