Still More Women Smokers

Smoking* >. among i women, :says "Truth's" Melbourne rep., shows no sign of a decline, it is increasing. The woman who does nbt at least occasionally indulge m a few whiffs is a rara avis, and habitual smokers are increasing by the hundred.

The girl who can display fingers unstained by nicotine is practically nonexistent. Few women m these hectic days can resist the temptation of flying to the cigarette for its soothing influence m her moments of. depression, overwork, or relaxation. In pretty well every "peggy bag" are carried a case of "fags," and its legitimate accompaniment, a match box.

London firms are beginning to specialise m smoking outfits : for women patrons. They are continually placing on the market new and dainty brands of the fascinating little cube especially designed for feminine patrons. Some of the cigarette and cigar cabinets m the big shops have cost as much as £500 each. They are stocked with all kinds .of novelties,

jewelled holders, ..cases m gold arid platinum, to say nothing of the more ordinary silver, enamelled, chased, and gem-studded.

And a development has made its appearance among the smartest Englishwomen. They are renouncing the cigarette for the more or less mild cigar. The makes produced for their special benefit ar,e smaller m size and of milder leaf than those intended for men.

Melbourne women exhibit no reluctance to adopt new ideas — however bizarre and- unbecoming. It will probably not be long before the fashionable restaurants and hotel lounges will witness the advent of-smartly-attired , dames and damsels with a fragrant cigar held between rouged lips.

Already the pipe— a tiny lilliputian affair, exquisitely fashioned, and studded with jewels — has made its appearance among the women of European cities. \
