MODRICH MAKES A MESS.
What's Wrong With the Referee?
A fair crowd paid for admission to see G. Modrich make a chopping block of J. O'Sullivan at the Auckland Town
Hall on Tuesday night. The O'Sulllvan supporters were very confident that their man would finish ModHeh In short time, and seemingly O'Sulllvan had the same idea m his head, but he was quickly disillusioned. From the song O'Sullivan sprang to his work, ?)nd after a couple of futile leads Mod-
rich coaxed him into a right cross and from then on a sequence of uppercuts, right swings, and left hooks made the Aucklander look sick. After being
pent to the canvas three times In the first two minutes, O'Sullivan received another weighty left hook which made him feel as though he had received an urgent call, and so Modrich was declared the victor.
A happening during the round whioh recalled O'Sulllvan's Glsborne fight 'ook place when he was sent to the boards m the corner of the ring. Referee Rums had counted up to nine when O'Sulllvan attempted to rise, and when hnlf up Modrich swung a right at
hfs opponent.. The blow missed, hut O'Sullivan sank back to the boards nnd the referee started to count him
again. Now. the reforee should protect the public and the fighters by endeavoring to stop fouls. He should stand between the boxers until tho fnllon man Is up again. Then he may bo hit. The idea of counting a man a second time when he has fallen without being hit Is too absurd.
