BLESSED SUPERANNUATION A Fly m the Ointment Tardy Refund on the Railways. "'Porter" writes from Wanganul East complaining that ho was paid off recently by the Department of Railways, but that the money due to him under the superannuation scheme (apparently he means refund of contributions paid m by him) did not . reach him -until seven weeks after no was paid off. During- that seven weeks "Porter," who has,a wife and- two children, "scoured the country right and left" but could find no sign of work; and the only chance (a chance of employment at a distance away) had to be lost because he could not get the- superannuation refund. "If this money, due to me, had been given out at the proper time, I should have been m employment five weeks ago." "Truth" does not profess to be able to deduce character from handwriting, but it suspects that "Porter" is the sort of man who is well worth a Job, and it hopes that he -and his family will not have to go beyond their present habitat m order to securo a living wage. As to his criticism of departmental" tardlneßS, possibly the department has a reply, but since his censure is expressed m terms of moderation, we publish some of it, because, as he says, there may be other men similarly placed: "Although the superannuation payments are many and complicated, surely a man can be paid off m full m less time than seven weeks. It seems strange that a big concern which is run under the Government cannot part up when an employee is finished. Other concerns can do it and I cannot see the reason why it can't be done on the railways. They are on to you before you take your coat off to fill m this form and that form <o have so much taken off your wages every other pay, and you cannot say 'Oh, leave It for now, I'll fix it up later on m tho day.' No, they stand over you while you put your signature down on the form, and If you refuso you get a memo from upstairs asking you tho reason why you refuse. It is a pity some of the officials concerned do not' get something of the same when tho time comes to paying out. And, of course, they pay no interest. "In other Government departments all money due is waiting when one finishes up. If it can be done m these, I cannot understand why tho same cannot be so on the railways. One has to wait until a small item (not £20) Jms been referred first to one, then to another, before it reaches its destination. I hope that others who leave the service will be more fortunate than I." ' - ' . MHMIHMMWHMMMMMMMM4 BAPON GUINEA POEM.
