The men that live at Hogan s Flat . y/-y Are riotous and free; Penny poker, crib and nap They play till two or three. But still they ari a simple crew, Who seldom, go to town, Because they know what fear~ ful rogues Wait thire to take them down. Jim Smithers hit ihe city once— He went there m a train, But soon was back <rf Hogan's Flat Without his Watch and chain. And after that no stranger came From down the city way But Hogans* crew were after him To learn the time of day.
For all the boys at Hogans Flat ■ Felt they'd been double-crossed , And each one \ worked real hard I to find f The watch Jim Smithers lost i Then /Danny Hogan said he'd /'".- To see> the city - -. ••.-..- v ? sights; ; v'-.v-^^ He told the boys he'd seek Jim' a watch And not go out at nights. But Dan was not up city long Before he made a slip; He told a crowded hotel bar The object of his trip. Next day a stranger beckoned Dan, Who followed like a sheep: The stranger had a siher watch He'd sell Dan on the cheap. "A tenner an' it's yours," he said, " A bloke gave it ter me Wot stole it from a country chap In town upon the spree. '*
"^n* was *c tall? " beamed happy Dan, Describing Jim complete; "You're right, you're right," the stranger said, ' ' You 'ye hit him off a treat Then wora soon reached the men outback Who toil on hill and plain That Dan was on his way for home With Jimmy's watch and chain. — Then hurriedly we boys prepared To give a welcome ball— With nikau palms and kingferns they Soon decked out Hogans Hall. ■'%.:. Dan on arrival took the stage, And every eye grew dim To see the hero proudly hand The long lost watch to Jim. "Ladies and gents" — Jims voice was heard — " This watch is really fine That Danny bought, but spare me days The flamin thing aint mine." * * * Its still the same at Hogans Flat: No stranger gets away, Until the crew are satisfied Jlboul the time of day.
