NORTHERN NOTCHINGS.

It Is practically settled that Stewart Smith will clash with Tommy Fairhall at Auckland on November 28 for 200 soys. at lOst. 31bs. Stewart Smith has not had a fight since he settled Keenan on his return from Australia, but he has been keeping fit and the lans can be sure of a keen scrap when the dispute Is on.

The Cyril Whitaker memorial fund organised by Mr. Fielding, of New Plymouth and Charlie Peoples In Auckland has realised £70 and arrangements for erecting it are m hand. The. appeal was generously responded to from all over the Dominion and subscriptions ranged from a modest shilling to five guineas.

A move is afoot m Auckland to send young Charlie Purdy to Paris to represent N.Z. at the next Olympic Games. The Boxing Council is, of course, more busy scrapping with the local associations than fostering the sport, but a general appeal for n "Purdy for Paris" fund would be sure to meet with a liberal response from northern devotees.

Jack Howard has been more than, busy at the Victoria Street establishment since his return. In addition to putting Jim O'Sullivan and Mike Flynn through their pacings he has taken Glarrie Blackburn m hand, and also a host of promising amateurs. Blackburn is having a nasal operation for an obstruction m his bugle which has affected his breathing badly, and hopes to regain his best form when he can get a freer supply of oxygen.

The annual meeting of the Waihi B.A. showed a profitable and successful year's working of this progressive Association. The following were elected as office-bearers for the ensuing year: Patron. Dr. T. G. Short; president, C. Rolfe; vice-president, W. M. Wallnutt; secretary, J. Nesbit; treasurer, P. Pascoe; committee, J. Davies, W. Stansbury, W. Weeks, A, R. Richards, F. Warne, H. Dwyer, and Archie Klnn.

The committee of the Franklin B.A. have been advised that affiliation had been granted to the Association, and having now the approval of the Minister and the N.Z. Boxing Council an evening is being arranged for October 25 at Pukekohe for trying out the district talent. Over 40 pupils are m practice with Jack Howard as instructor, and m addition to the amateur items some well-known boxers are giving exhibition spars, Including Clarrle Blackburn, Fred Hansen, Joe King and Jack Howard.

Fred Hansen Is m hard training again and looking for a clash if any enterprising Association wish to match up a boy who can be guaranteed to give a hard, willing go.

Jack Howard made a popular and successful debut as a trainer m his home town by sending m three winners.

If Fairhall's jaw is out of joint there is a probability of Volaire being offered the flfirht with Stewart Smith, who is now busy at the Auckland V.M.C.A. gymnasium.
