v The first gold found in New South wales was discovered an English university man named Hargreaves, not far from Qulgong, and the place which Is severely "pot-holed" to-day is called after the 'discoverer. The largest nugget ever found- in the Mother State was discovered . toy fossicking partners, Beyers and Hefferman, at Hillond. Tho ''nugget" was - a flat sheet of gold standing between two rocks, it was taller- than either of the partners. Beyers later; owned most of Hillend and became an M.P., but he died in poverty. It will be easier to discover alluvial gold in Auckland's Carnival Art Union which is bound to be successful. The lucky "digger" who puts in a ticket arid pulls out £300 need not envy Beyers (who is dead); the investor <who finds £100 will be better off .than Hpfferman (who is also deceased);' and the speculator who Is handed £50 \rill be much better off than Hargreavea, who- departed this life so long ag6.*
