Southland trainers are busy preparing for the Spring meetings. Fine weather and good tracks have enabled them to get their charges well forward. W. Mcßay, among others, is a busy man, and it is rumored that he will keep the rest of them busy when the colors are up. Tin Soldier is now owned by W. McRay, and will carry his colors this season. Old Rorke's Drift is enjoying a spell. „ A. McKay has several maidens under his charge at Riverton. The most likely looking one is a chestnut gelding "by Soldier's Chorus out of that good mare Seekashore. \ Summum will join A. McKay's team shortly, having changed ownership. His new owner is Mr James Hodges, of Nightcaps. Veteran trainer J. O. Hymers has Morse Signal m great heart, but she wants a race or two before she will be at her best. A wet track suits ■this mare. J. Thistleton has SartoltEe it-., great buckle.- The little chap has bailt up well during the winter; but he is very backward, as most of his work has been done oh the beach. But "Thisy" knows just what's needed, as most Southlanders know well. The same trainer has a big fullbrother to Carmine and Red Gown — two well-known performers up the line. He is a likely contender for hurdle events later. on.A. Voight, the successful lightweight apprentice, has finished h;g apprenticeship with Hymers, and is riding at the northern Spring meetings. iLightweight jockeys will be scarce m Southland this season, and some of the', lads are beginning to _ wonder when the elephant racing season will commence. Listening Post has joined J. W. Bllis's stable at Invercargill and is being regularly worked on the local tracks, along with Ellis's other charges — Silver Peak, Eleus and In The Pink. Ellis has a useful team for the Spring meetings. The Gore Racing 1 Club will open the Southland racing season on October 2i.and 23.
