Petone Play City at Auckland. The most successful season yet cx r perienced by the Auckland Rugby League is gradually drawing to a close and a week hence will' see the curtain rung down as far as football m Auckland is concerned for the year 1922. Last Saturday the challenge shield jnatch between Petone and City was staged m the most wretched weather imaginable, but despite this a good, crowd stood m the pouring rain and, rfih or no enjoyed one of. the best Contests, considering- the -conditions that has eventuated during the season. The sloppy ground and wet, greasy ball naturally were not conducive to good football, but the handling of the leather and the passing, at times were almost brilliant. City proved victors, but only by the narrow margin of 2 points, the final scores -being 5 points to 3 m their favor. It was a day when luck entered largely into "the play, and m this respect the Petone men were not at^ till favored. Luck is an all important' part of '.football, and had the Petone team received a fair share they would have snared the shield. The play throughout .\\»as fast and open; a little too much kicking perhaps was indulged m, but this was only to be. expected. The' members of both teams worked ( hard and continuously from beginning ' to. end, and it- was hard luck that a drawn game did not result. Baulks- .played a great game for Petone at full-back. He took the ball remarkably well and thoroughly de-served-the applause which was accordect him. ■ , Townshend w,as doing, a lot of "squealing' 1 : all- through the game. Some of- the Petone players went stone, deaf listening tp him. v: ' . Archie Fergusson had charge of'the \yhistle. • He won't stand for farcical scrums, "and awarded numerous free kicks against the City ' pack. .
