Few people m outside districts realise what a splendid asset Gisborne has m the Waiikanae, L'Beach, which is along sandy stretch within half a mile' of the Post Office. .Visitors to the town; have been agreeably surprised, that such a popular seaside resort exists so close to the town, arid it is surprisingthat until two' years ago no" sustained effort was. made- to improve it. -Now/ however,- an energetic Beach improve-, merit Society has taken the matter m •hand and. .within two years improve-; ments to the value of £6000 have been effected. In addition to constructing a concrete promenade along /the .foreshore, bathing-sheds, and «• tea-rooms have been constructed, and an up-to-date paddling pool has ibeen built for the children; This year the Society is" continuing, , its work and contemplates' erecting \ a modern ,~ p*avilion, and 6ons"tructing a children's playground, besides extending the promenade. Last j summer the beach was. 'patronised by thousands of people, and . the "call of the surf" was more pronounced (than m the past years. It. is m fact because |of the increasing' popularity that the I Society finds itself compelled to ex- : tend its existing :works, and the fact' that. all the work has been done by voluntary contribution is m itself a testimony to the energy of the Society. !
