NORTHERN NOTES.

(By "Waimangu.")

The^ failure 'Of Sea -De'il and Waikaretu to run first or second m the Wellington Steeplechase was a set-back to Aucklanders.

; Two Aucklancters, m Arch Salute and Gold Kip, fought out the Charity Cup, but they were not greatly fancied 'locally. f

Grand Canyon was supported m Auckland to a man the first day at Trentham, but the best he could, do was finish second: Grand Canyon is a fine jumper. - .

Gold Kip has always :been a little champion on left-handed-, tracks, and when taken away from Auckland to race it takes a pretty good horse to dawn him ninder welter weights.

G. Price left Auckland last week with The, Shag and Loyal Irish. The latter is a useful horse who might pick up a minor handicap or two before returning- home. • •

M. Ryan, is handling a two-year-.old called Tactician, at Ellerslie.

Present indications are that several Ellerslie trained horses will betaken to the Gisbbrne meeting.

Those who -had • noted Lady Ridicule at work were quite prepared to. see her m the- money at Trentham, and they supported. her accordingly. She ran a good race, beating all but L' Amour. The latter it will be remembered, was punted on at the Great Northern meeting, but got beaten into third, place.

;Glen Canny is 'back' on the tracks after having a short spell since the Great Northern meeting. He was very •unlucky that he did not catch a race then, but perhaps his turn will come m the Spring when he should be right at the top of his form. •

Oakleigh appears ' to have run a banging good race m the Wellington Steeplechase, when he beat all but Master Strowan. Oakleigh is not much to look at, but he ban jump well and go fast too. ' . , .

Mr. G. Nieoll's horses, hitherto trained by T. Wilson, are now m B. Rae's team at Ellerslie.

Considerable interest is being taken m Auckland m the sitting of the N.Z. Trotting Conference, owing- to the Ashtourton sportsman, Mr. H. F. Nichol, opposing Mr. J. Rowe for the position of president.

. F. Gilchrist has taken Khublai Kfian and Ge'offry m hand again. Neither horse quite raced up to expectations during the season.

Pente, who., since coming to Auckland has. b^en a rank failure, is again m work under J. Thorpe's supervision. A win for -the. chestnut mare would be pleasing to chronicle, as her owner, "Jimmy" Gleeson, has not had the best of luck with the gee-gees.

There is a wide difference between the hunter class and top-hole cpmpany. At Ellerslie, Waikaretu could have given away stones m weight to those he met, but against the top-notchers at Wellington he could only run a poor third.

J. Lambess rarely goes " away -from home with horses without paying expenses, and the Charity Cup fell to one of his team m Arch Salute. He very nearly tore off another race the first day with Lady Ridicule.
