Jimmy Doyle, the genial old warrior whose name is a household word wherever sports most do congregate, is relinquishing his billet of Chief Sanitary Inspector of Wellington, and goes out on superannuation. Though you wouldn't think it to look at him, James, m his younger days, was a member of the police force. This was after he- had done a bit of gold mining down the West Coast m the old rush days. As a. member of the; Wellington force Jimmy Doyle was a pretty useful kind of bloke when situations arose which required something sterner than tact and kid glove methods. Being champion heavy-weight lifter of the Dominion (which wasn't a Dominion m those days), a first-class pugilist, a famous swinger of Indian clubs and a runner and jumper of renown, it may be imagined that he was able to. give a good account of himself when it became necessary to give the comether to the obstreperous and. projagnarit. He . incidentlly found- his prowess as an athlete a pretty profitable sideline, outside the force. After ten years m the Wellington force Jimmy doffed ■the uniform and entered the service of the city. That Wellington, has the reputation of being a healthy, place must m , some measure be due to Jimmy, for he lias been censoring bad smells and effluvias over a very long period.' He has never sidestepped a sport m his life and still takes, an interest m all forms of manly pastime. He is by way of . being guide, counsellor and friend to many young athletes, and as he can speak as a practical man on such important matters as training methods,, ate, he is much sought after m this respect. "Truth" extends its best wishes to Jimmy, and hopes that his w.ell-earned holiday may be a long one. V , )
