WITH PROPOUND APOLOGIES TO THE ABSENTEE LANDLORD.
An appeal was made to the Wellington City Council Finance Committee last week by a deputation from the Wellington Returned Soldiers' Association for work for distressed "Diggers." Theydidrnot ask for oharity, but for the right to work. Attention was drawn to tho inoreased numbers of Chinese who were settling m the country, and the Mayor was asked to make strong representations to the Government to check their immigration and repatriate all Orientals who were now m the Dominion. While they were in 'competition with the Chinese/ "Diggers" found it impossible to earn a livelihood. _
