NORTHERN NOTES.

(By "Waimangu.") ■Te Aroha Meeting to-day (Saturday) and Monday. So far this season Boomerday is the biggest winner amongst Auckland-owned horses, with £2760. Secretary W. S. Spence, of the A.R.C., tripped down to Palmerston North ■ last week to have a look at the Manawatu Club's tote. • Clonmel is being schooled over the small fences at Ellerslie. He gives promise of taking to the jumping game. Handicapper ' Wynyard rose Truthful m the Thames Cup two pounds for jogging home m the Hamilton Cup. Much to the delight of • other owners Truthful was .not sent to the Thames. It wiil' take something pretty good to beat Radiant Light m the Oaks at Ellerslie. Some Fashion is paying exes, this season and a bit besides. Kaceful is not being badly treated by the handicappers. - Acting on a report received from the Alexandra Racing Club the Auckland District Committee last week outed H. Glover for life, F. C. Hunt for five years and J. Mullins for one year. White sheep eat more than black ones because there are more of them. That is why Qum Abbey is •well, up m the winning sires' list this season. The Wanganui Cup winner Ngata. has only to be nominated for the Great Northern double to ; be favorite. . • Oranga Otway is now working at Ellerslie, he having been , purchased by a patron of C. Coleman's stable. J. Buchanan has only two horses rac-. mg — Raceful. and Mumble. It says.something for his training when both gather m the money. v W. Tozer had his team added to when he got a gelding by Hymettus and a 'filly by Monoform. v .Formalin is inclined to dwell at the barrier, otherwise he would win a good hack race. In Auckland trotting is going to beat .the suburban and country galloping meetings out of sight.

Stammer is the sort likely to come home m any company and surprise 'em. The Thames Meeting on Saturday was made uncomfortable when rain commenced to fall before the first race, and continued during the afternoon. The Cup ended m a surprise— the lit-tle-fancied Prince Carl trouncing his opponents m good style. Tinokaha continues to win over hurdles, and he won the First Hurdles at Thames but had to be kicked right out to beat Ruptone a head. Raceful did not run up to his best form m the Cup and he might do better on a less circular track. Stammer won the Apprentices' Plate all the way and he will win again ere long. Thrace was a starter m both jumping races the . first day at Thames. In the Hurdles ho fell and m the Steeplechase he baulked at one of the fences. Lady Hill' might bring off a surprise m a hack race. She was unlucky tlie first day at Thames, Tenacious seems to have had his day, and the field will have to be very weaii for him to ..win again. The disappointing Pagoda nearly got on the Winning -list when she beat all but Ben Nevis m the Trial Handicap. Jolly Gay was backed for good money m the Trial a.t Thames but after, being out m front to the home turn was beaten into fourth place.Capsal, the favorite m the Steeplechase, just pulled his backers through, and m a great finish only beat Toddy by half a neck. Hipo put tip a good performance dn the Borough Handicap. Though' fired into the handicap he did not get on his legs quickly and was a long way. back at one stage. .He soon made up his ground and won nicely at the end. Stork was very disappointing m the Thames Cup, and at no part of the race did he look to have a winning chance. ' Connemara will be taking out a prize soon. The chestnut is unlucky and should have won before now. AUCKLAND TROTTING NOTES. The Otahuhu Meeting was a great success and despite the fact that the second day was on a Monday the tote turnover showed only a small decrease of £4000. Grand Voyage would not go right m the early part of the big race the second day, but he gave a . great exhibition of straight-out trotting when he did get going. ' All Bell lias no chance of winning a two miles race off his present mark. Bundles of bullion went on Ballin each ' ,c '". but he would not spark up at the Start. Salamander and R. A. McMillan are a fine pair. They .took the ' thick end of the £500 saddle race and only ' had to go 2m. 18s. to win. The going wasn't sticky the second day but Red Star stood like a statue on the ''mark. Just a shame how much this horse is overrated. W. Orange was, as usual, m a deuce of a hurry with Brendo- and he never let. anything near him. Some good is Brendo. For once Guava went right all the way and at one stage of the Maiden trotters' stanza it looked as though. Gieson had a side wager he would lap the field. Woodvale is no good. He has' pace, but either he settles his chance at the start or leaves' his feet when the pressure is on. As usual Ben Wallace helped himself to a little v place money. . ■ - One gee gee who started the second day wouldn't know he had been to the ; races. He will know at Easter for sure. Pudnina doesn't want to go any further than a mile. Up to eight furlongs he can leg it a bit. ' Piletta looks like making a useful little saddle horse. On neither day did Promenade leave the mark till all chance of winning 'was gone. But when she does leave it will be "good night." Of course her punters may be broke- ere this. , Planking the pennies on Pani didn't help him and' he was m Queer-street with only half the trip gone m the Governor's Handicap. He was lame, and perhaps this accounted for his poor efforts. Track work would send a man to the ' "dilly"- house. Before the meeting Ballin, Great Britain, Promenade and Gold. Bud were breaking watches; and. burning all the rubber off the tyres, yet not one of them got a place. Evcept when Lad5 r Dunmore landed the lucre the shrewd (?) punters got the father o^a hiding. B. Jarden had a very rough ride on Eley. ' Whoever wins on the gelding will deserve the money. Huia Girl is not much good but she gets place-money because most of her opponents are aviators and are m tho air most of the time. Napper was the neddy- to win two races, and each time W. Wdlletts had a very comfortable drive. Napper is a greatly improved horse. With ordinary luck Heather Girl would have been a nuisance on the Becond day. With th© crackajacks out of the way Williariiv; the First will win over any distance. \ " • Profiteer ran one good race when he finished third. Queen Pirate went 2m. 15s. to win the mile saddle. That's the end of her. Manuka Park is losing some of his brilliancy and the, field will be weak when he wins. Nita Cole is a maiden pacer who might tear off a race at any time. The victory of Amberite was largely due to the riding of H. Sewell. Sheer horsemanship pulled the race out of the fire. Keep a trifle for Miss Huon Junior next time out m a saddle .race' Don't bother abou ther age, because, like the ladies, they get more knowing with age. Because she didn't start, the second day won't make me forget Charley's Aunt at Easter. But I Will want to know who is doing the saddle-sdtting. Bellson Is something like The Toiler to look at, but can trot much faster. I In-, tend to be on Bellson's side next time we play races. G. McKendrick only had Wairemana ' five minutes and he-, got her to run her best race this season when she beat all but Gold Flake. Harness is the game for Wairemana -apparently. The way Grey Peter cleared ou tfrom the field suggested that the others m the race threatened to . kill him if they caught him.
