Mr. W. G. Stead will, if he can get there himself, race some of his team at the Avondale meeting m September. Since the Napier meeting Joe Oldfield lias had charge of Tatimi and he took the old Multifid gelding south last week. The Absurd— Sea Spray colt trained by S. Reid at Hastings, has been given a light blister and will require a short spell. Surveyor is starting to get into a bit of shape now and his own® 1 seems confident that the crack son of Nassau will stand a preparation. Battle Knight is a big boom at Napier, and if half one hears is true the Solferino gelding will stretch the best of them m the Hawke's Bay Guineas. The three-year-old Truthful (Demosthenes — Lily white) is a nice compact filly and as sober as could be desired. She looks like turning out an early winner. With a view to giving his horse Feramorz every chance at the stud, Mr. AY. G. Stead has had nearly the whole of his mares stinted to the son of St. Frusquin. J. Campbell, who is now attached to the stables of F. Christmas, came North last week td get the remainder of Mr. H. AY. Brown's horses to take to Riccarfcon. A regular worker at Napier is the wellbred Tout Bon, who is a full-brother to Almoner. Tout Bon had one race at WoodviJle but he looks a greatly-im-proved horse. I Heathersprig is expected to shape extra well m the Winter Cup. He is one of those that likes to win from the barrier rise, so he and Clean Sweep will be found m front early. Cashmere is being spelled at Napier but he is to go into -work again immediately. He looks as if the spell has done him good -and should be a useful horse m handicaps this season. No three-year-old could look better than does Delight at the present time j and the meeting between she, Humbug, Battle Knight, AVJnter AVind and Demand m the Hawke's Bay Guineas will be a great drawing card. Grand National Week opens on •Tuesday next when the Winter Cup and Grand National Steeplechase will be run. The big hurdles come on for decision ou Thursday, and the meeting will conclude on the Saturday. Delight's two-year-old sister is a wonderfully well-grown filly and to look at her on the road or m her box one could be paxdoned if. they mistook her for a four-year-old. There seems to he little chance of her racing as a two-year-old unieas it is m the back end of the season. Quite one of the best of the Absurds that hTis been seen so far, 'is the Sea Elf colt purchased at the Wanganui sales for • 62~> guineas. He is a beautifullytopped colt and seems to be a eery sensible sort of youngster. .If he does not turn out a crackajack 1 "Spearmint" will bo much deceived. That little wonder of wonders, Sasanof, is doing a lot of hill work at Napier, but G. Jones will shortly put him on the tracks. The little fellow seems quite Sound and his owner is delighted with his prospects for the new season. It is more than likely that ho will be kept for weight-for-age races.
