COURSING

And Kennel Notes

(By "Master McGrath," c/o P.O. Box 691, Dunedln.) ; The .New Year has dawned fairly favorably upon us, and "Master Mac." has much pleasure m extending the season's greetings to all "Truth's" sporting friends. Followers of the fur intend to liven up matters during 1917 and to prosecute the game m a fair and fearless manner. Wasters, crooks, jobbers, and tinkering tricksters are to be rigidly weeded out until the sport is erected upon a clean tooting, So let the- "cute bhoys" just open their blinkers as wide as a frightened cow's.. Our loving friend, wee Harry, Divers, did very well indeed during 1916 — a bad year of war aid coursing rows, if he just keeps upon the self same track and his "cobbers" of the National Associaton, we shall all be satisfied. What is needed m coursing is a clean, healthy game, and if the national body cannot make that then they should kill the game or themselves. Either make i£ or kill it. Matters, however, are looking up very well and we believe the sport will 'find its soul. Charley Marias, secretary of the Central Otago Club, has had a run to Invercargill and bumped into Watty Broad. Watty is getting a White Hope pup over from the other side. Jack Vickery will be taking some of his dogs to Omakau. This, centre will I open the season at Easter. - Viv. Jackson is now a full blown hayseed at Gunwales' Bush, and has a fine kennel installed there. Nine of Diamonds has had a pretty litter to old Dare Devil. Harry Drake, of Omakau, is already busy feeding the plumpton thera with several young hares. The veteran, Jack Boyle, has much new blood m his big kennels, and many of. the items seem to be really promising. There are two dogs from Nelson and two from Hamilton expected at the Omakau meeting. The owners will not be disappointed if they come. Owners, ; trainers, and others intending to' make the trip to Omakau, Central Otago, at Easter should get into touch with Charley "Ma^ks. the secretary, Heriot Row, ?Duiieairi. Mr . Billy Wellington is presenting a cud for, the meeting at Omakau. 3.. Divers has secured a good pup as a result of Fleetwind'a visit to Western Star. Kennel news and general reports from club secretaries and coursing fans will be availed of now In this column. So keep busy; Each club likes to learn how the next club is doing, and if the, season will offer any promise. The council, of the Coursing Association (Mr. B. S. Irwin, president) recently further considered the "allegation that a greyhound .had been "rung In" at the Nelson meeting m June last. Mr. W. Anderson was called, and said that he informed the council secretary that the dog Safeguard only left his charge to course at the Invercargill May meeting, and was returned to his place, and, to the best of his knowledge, the dog was not taken from his place to go to Nelson. A letter was received from Mr. W. Wellington (of Wellington), registered partner of Mr. Price, who disclaimed any complicity m the alleged ringing m. Mr. Price, being present, supported Mr. Wellington's letter. After considering the evidence the council resolved that Mr. E. G. Price, having admitted the charge of "ringing m" the greyhound Safeguard as Pride of Wellington, should be suspended during the pleasure of the council, and that Mr. Anderson, whose evidence was regarded as unsatisfactory; should be disqualified for two years. Mr. W. Wellington was onerated of any complicity In the "ringing m." The council resolved that the prompt action of the secretary, Dave Gushek, and Mr. Bland (of Nelson) m bringing the matter before the council was cordially to be commended.
