TROUBLE ON A TRANSPORT

. — <• Messrs. Campbell and Burkes Position A Military Tribute to their Assistance In reference to the report of the inlervlew^lFtho Waterside Workers with the Hon. James Allen on June 16 last, referring to the Dalmore and reported m "Truth's'Mssuo of June 17, we have been requested on behalf of Messrs. Campbell and Burke to publish the following facts; From tho report which appeared it seems to have been insinuated that Messrs. Campbell and Burke In putting their own laborers on to work all night on January 12 last on the s.s. Dalmoro paid such laborers at a lees rate than would have been paid to wharf laborers, and on it appearing that Messrs. Campbell and Burko had charged the Government tho full rate, It seems ,to have boon then suggested that they put the difference, about 5s Id per man. m tholr own pockets. Tho actual facts wero that Messrs. Campbell and Burko paid the men at tho samo rate as tho wharf laborers would have received If they had worked all night and tho amounts so paid were, of course, charged to the Government. During the whole time that men are being employed on fitting troopships tho Transport Board haa an Ofllclal Timekeeper, who remains there night and day to check all time worked and wages paid. In connection with troopship work, Messrs. Campbell and Burke, after tho completion of the re-fltting of the sjj. Dalmoro, received the following letter: Deportment of Defence, Headquarters Ofllcc, Wellington, January, 1916. Dear Sir, — Tho General Officer commanding tho New Zealand Military Forces, doslros mo to convoy to you his high appreciation of tho valuable ohmlsuuico which you have rendered the military authorities m connection with transport work. Tho fitting out and prompt despatch of ship* is of vital importance In maintaining the fighting uttlclency of troops at tho front, nnd although a very natural satisfaction must bo yours In tho knowledge of work well dono. still the Commandant wishes to place on record his thanks for the prompt and willing manner In which tho requirements of tho service had been root by you. Tho Commandartt further desires that this mifssngo of appreciation be convoyed to your staff and to all workmen employed who, by their diligence and willingness to work at a)l hours, have so materially assisted the cause m this omorgency.-— Yours faithfully, W. U ROBLNSON. Mnjor. Assistant Quartormanier-GononU. Chairman Traucport board.
