COURSING

And Kennel Notes I (By "Master McGrath," c/o P.O. B6x j 691, DunedioO ' FIXTURES, 1916. j Southland Club's meetings, May 17 and t 18; June 28 and 29. ; Dunedin Club's meeting m June. . ' .to, corresponx):eint. J i "D, H. C."— Am attending to the mat' j ter: Next week. . Charlie Jenkins, m uniform, V paid a visit to his old coursing friends In Dunedin during th& holidays. Charlie has many good things to. say regarding Trenthain, and tho prize boys among whom his soldiering is cast. His many friends m the dour burg wish Mm luck and glory plus Kaiser Bill's scalp on his shoulder-piece. . Tommy Drumgoole. of Georgetown.tode 80 miles on horseback to the Central Club's meeting at Omakau 1 That was a ride, and no mistake. Small wonder he got such a fine reception. Many Dunedin sports including Mr. B. S. Irwln and other keen followers of the same from the far south, attended at Omakau. The well-known Jack Ross was there, at least, "Master Mac" understands he was. Six nominated dogs from Arrowtown failed to accept, thus upsetting th* programme* considerably, and accounting for sbc byes. The sport was good and satisfactory, but the hares proved insufficient, weak and badly trained. Who was the accomplished, gentleman who took on the training of the hares? Whoever he was it is up to the club to say something, or do something. Otherwise the meeting was a splendid one all through, and is likely to prove an annual affair. To Mr. E. i Price is due the inauguration of the Easter gathering at Omakau. This is the second season there. The stake money went to three owners, their dogs dividing. "Master Mac" considers this a paltry ending to the stake— but perhaps the fact that the hares were weak and scarce accounted for the division of the money among no less than three competitors. Con- , sequently there was no win, and no glorious achievement as a result of the Grand Challenge Stake meeting. Mr. Irving, In vercargilL adjudicated, giving entire satisfaction. Writer does not mean that ho pleased everyone— no judge should try to do that. But Mr. Irving carried out his du^y without • fear, favor or affection— the three items expected from judges and critics. -Not' having been favored with an offidaily marked card or programme (as promised) , . one cannot supply much more of the meeting than the dogs* ' names and the results. The accidental byes: Lucky Devil (Mr, Broad}, Erin's Star, Speckled Band, Bonny^ Jean (Mr. Price), Quick set. I ! Best Thought and Anzac opened the fray, Anzac led by three lengths, winning handsomely. '..', Last Card and Mentor next tackled. Mentor fl^r. Marks), Last Card led, and appeared to some to do all the scoring. To a few others including the Judge, Mentor won by a margin. There. ; was much <e<mitii/int over this particular course, unfavorable to the judge's decision. Last • Card belongs to ' Billy Wellington," of Wellington, and is by Grand Slam from Lucky Charm. It was imported from Sydney. ' Bagpipes accidental bye: Sweet Nell ; beat Full Moon (Mr.; Vickery); Safe Guard beat Moon Call; Prince Palantine beat Maori Chief; Opera Girl, a bye. ■'•■■■■■'. I Splendid reports have generally come i to hand regarding Sweet Nell's form i and stylo, also Lucky Devil's appear - X ance.' The latter captivated many. ' Mr. Billy Wellington came the whole ■ way from Wellington to see his dogs run. With Tommy Drumgoolo, Billy Is out on his own as a sport i A danco and smoke concert brought ■ the successful gathering to a close.
