NORTHERN NOTES.

By " Waimangu."

OHINEMURI RACES.

To-day's Programme.

The postponed second day's racing of the Ohinemuri Club is set for today (Saturday) and though postponed meetings are hardly ever a big success, still Jhe outing at Paeroa this afternoon Is not likely to suffer to any great extent, as the Club has adopted a very sportsmanlike spirit m allowing visiting trainers the extra expense incurred.

Punters will have tho first day's form to work upon, but this may not help them much, as tho course is ono on which luck plays ah important part m the decision of races.

The gong will sound with the Hikntaia Handicap, and If Nicomar is labelled he will be the favorite. Bluoform and Don Castor will carry money, but all things considered Blueform and Don Castor may be best for backers.

Handicapper Wynyard has just made Lady Mlddleton ff- presdmt of . the Waltakerel Handicap, and it sho gets beaten punters will unload much of their wads. Tho draw for positions should fathom the second dividend.

Qloy and Cloudy Dawn will be the choices of backers m the Second Hurdles, and if Gloy fences well it is hard to see him beaten. However, Dogger Bank should havo walked m the first day, and perhaps will score to-day.

The big ra.ce Is the Paeroa Handicap and on recent form Munster should be a good favorite. Selection may be next best.

Many of those m tha Miners' Handicap will start earlier In the Hikutaia Handicap. Gluepot and Gluclnn may run well.

Punters will bo up against it m tho Waikato Handicap. Olonsplre, Hamlet, Worcester, Gold Fran and Celobrlty havo nil showed fair form, and Glonsplro and Hamlet may be most fancied.

It looks, barring accidents, Coronade or Scot's Guard m the Autumn Steeplechase.

It is difficult to know- just which horses will start m the Walhi Handicap, as ail are engaged m events earlier In the day. \Lady Mlddleton should bo favorite with a start, and m her absonco Gallupin.

A more wrotched day than Wednesday of last week when the Ohinemuri Club opened tho annual mooting at Paeroa has not been experienced by racegoers this season. Just after noon rain began to fall, and as the afternoon wore on Kb violence increased and tho crowd was soon planted on tho grandstand and nothing would havo enticed them off. However, the programme was run off, but tho rain continued on and the following day's racing was bumped along to tho following Saturday. However, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday saw no cessation In tho weather and tho Club called a meet-, ing and decided upon a postponement till to-day (Saturday). Of courso this meant much expense to owners and trainers of horses visiting tho meeting and the Club with good spirit decided to pay expenses of horses and tralnors for one week, alHo tho roturn "exes" of horses who had been sent home. This uctlon was much appreciated.

Kauri King took on the best at Paoron, but after running in 'behind hlB stablematr, Lady Middleton. for tho nrst couple of furlongs, ho got a pain and retired.

The soft going was not to Cheddar* liklnjr at Paeron. and he was unsighted m his only start.

Tho well-treated Lady Mlddloton jnudo no race of the St. Patrick's Handicai). Claude Prwvn shoved her to tho front In a stride, and tho black mure did the rest, and never looked like being worried, winning very com-' fortably.

Brown Lock was expected at Paeroa, but was slipping all over tho courfio and could not act m the going:. Bo a trifle with him next time if the conditions are different.

How m It that races nre not started anywhero near the lime stated m the race books at country meetings. This 1h a matter for the "stipe*" to note and roport to the Racing Conference. At present tho ijuom stun ut any lime nt all imrt it look* n« though th« cjuhs or toto ofllclnlM »ro frlKhtoned a "quid" or two may be «hui out. Tho lato HtartliJK makes It n ri«k for visitors who want to catch the return train home, and moro than on« havo mlsaed It.

The present permit tKBUcd to tho Ohlnnmuri Club should ho cancelled until such thru* oh a decent cour«<> m tnld out. When the going is «oft it i« nothing Ic«h than Inviting death to ride ot) Jt.

A mllo from home Dogger Hank wan fifty yards m front of Cloudy Dawn ami then tho luttor won by v head. Certainly Cloudy Dawn finished well, but Dogger Bank should have won easily.

The only oties happy at Paeroa were the hayseeds. They did riot care it rain fell for a week, Q» the other, hand, punters would have preferred a drought. • .. . ■ , ":.

Handicapper Edwards should bo asked why he set Munstor (who I fancy is still ellgibloUo runin hack company and wljo has never been asked to run further than a mile, and that distance only once) to concede weight to Phosphorus, winner :of the Taranaki C^pdnd other good races, besides running second to Chortle at Ellerslte and second m the Takapuna Cup.

Blueform carried. '4%lbs oveVwelght when he strolled home m front m the Maiden at Paeroa. It lobks good tor him winning again this afternoon.

King Lupin still holds his position as favorite for the Easter Handicap. A.U sorts of rumojrs oC phenomenal trials are m the air.- •

Glenspire was very unlucky In tho Netherton Welter and with anything like a decent run would have been home and dried. He' did not jump oft! well, got into a bad."possle" and was many lengths behind the leaders at the home turn. Hq_ then, put m a great run and finished a good third.

Manurero find lhapuna were out by themselves all atong the trip m the Karangahako Handic/Lp, ' but lhapuna' always had it on her small opponent and won nicely m the run homo.

The Phaeton gelding Eminent was well up on the outside of tho second bunch at tho ,horrib turn In the Karangahako Handicap, but that wns the last seen of him and ho faded out of the picture m the run to the judge.

Blue Garment gut chopped • right back when the tapes Were skied m. the Karangahako Handicap and wlthi two furlongs covered was last but: one: He then got a run and swinging round the turtn well, rattled down thoy straight twice as fast as the loaders and just failed \o get up second. W. Mobberley has the old gelding right back to his best form and may tiring oft* a surprise' m one of the sprints at Easter*

Tho class of hurdlers racing at Ohinemuri was about as poor»ea could bo found. Cloudy Dawn and* Doggo? Bank nrp very ordinary, and yet tho/ finished fifty yards m front 'of th» third horse, with the others all round] tho track. '

Tho erratic Revelation for once loft the. mark In the. First Hurdles at Paeroa and he went off for full'valuo and put a break of ten lengths uetweei* himself and the field m two furlongsv However, ho did not last . long, and smacking the, third fenco took tho count. ".■■■-•

Hamlet, who is about' tho boldest galloporseen out at the country meetings, returned a good price when 1m won tho Nctheiton Welter. P. Brady pushed him to tho front at barrier rise and soon established a lead suulclont to make the prize his.

Tarnrun. Jack is a horse likoly t« turn out well later on. He has some pace and plenty of size, so thut ho should como right with {.imo. In. tho Nethorton Welter at Paeroa he was chasing Hamlet all along tho trip, and just stayed long enough to beat the fast finishing Glensplro for second money.

Worcester was In tho limelight fora mile m the Paeroa Cup, but that was the end of him, as ho then faded out. The Soult gelding appears to have quite- lost his punch.

Barbwlre, who was making his' first appearance over big country, shaped really well m tho Vaqroo. Steeplechase, and though beaten into, third pluco ho was responsiblo for . tho paoo. He jumped every fenco allko and looks Mko being useful over the big fencea later on.

Carbiness, who ran second to Nlco-< mar In the KAmatd Hack, was almost tho outsider of tho Held and returned nearly a. score of "qulda" for (second. His backem were lucky, bocauflo with anything like* a decent run Gluepot must havo occupied .second berth.

Golden Glow finished very, gumoly In tho Paeroii Stcopleehaun and ran a tfiiv race. Considering that the chestnut has only been m work about a. month* ho did well.

After crawl lnpr through the flrat eou* pie of fences Waln«aro Oate Tat)^ tossed out.

Munater's Ilnisliing run m the St. Patrick's was the star item on the first duy. He got badly placed early and lost many lengths, but when he got clear 'ran through 'the' Held m great, stylv. He was too far away to have a chance of winning, but was just touched off for second place. R. • McMiken's- prad should see a short price m the handicap to-day (Saturday). :.-■; :. . ... «. The St. Paul mar.c Valentine, who has been racing without success at the 'smalls," will go into TV. Sharpe's stables at Ellerslle. By his victory at Paeroa, Cloudy Dawn's weight for. the Brighton hurdles goes up to list lib. Once again Glensprlng broke down badly m tho Karahgahako Handicap and was noddlng-his friends farewell as ho left" the course. Blueform, ■' -who was unlucky at South Auckland, did It all right at l'aeroa m the Maidon. McL-Mynn I pushed l|lm out from the barrier first j and. then sat 1 still while the son of ; Monoform strode along l«v front and "won very easily. *. Hopye started from the fence m the ;Mnkleiv and^ jumped out well, but did j i-not have 's'urficiehi 'pace to get into tho unoney and was \vell buck as the line •'was cros|icd_ After r'unriltnK on the outside of v bunch all the -way m the Maiden and finishing fourth Nicomar came out Into '| m the day and won the Komata Hack pulling up. Ciloy'a victory m tho Ohinemurl Cup was » comfortable one. After Snlviu '. and SelecllrmMiad raced themselves to j a standstill fighting for trie lead, Robinson pushed to the front with Gloy and won eunily. V; '' -' '■ F.
