IN DEFENCE OF THE JUDGE.

Mr. E. Arnold's Answer. Dear "Truth." — Last week m your paper appeared a letter from "exShort Trouser Man." .suiting that the judges do not want K. Arnold on the Prison Board. Well, if the long sentenced prisoners m all the gaols be.lieve this. I feel sure they are under a mistake, for 1 know nothing: of such a fouling 1 myself, and 1 cannot believe there is any truth In such. All the judges are out for the reformation of every one that rocs down m life, lie says the judge* are hard-hearted. If "Short Trouser Man" travelled the world over, I feel sure he would not find a more kind-hearted Judge than Sir Robert Stout. 1 know the gentleman; his money, his time, his whole wish Is for the elevation of those who «o down on the road of life. Watch him at the trials, *»cc how he protects those who are being tried; when Hentences are to be passed, his whole thoughts are how can he put the prisoner on the right track. No doubt any man that has received a long sentence and is doing time, feels when he meets the jrarno Judge In gaol that ho haa come to overhaul his character. Not so. The judge Is ready to help all those who are trying to work out their own redemption. Could any judge do more than that?— Yours, etc., EDWIN ARNOLD. Wellington, March 16,
