Championship Meeting at Wellington.

On the Basin Reserve this (Saturday) afternoon at 2.15 p.m., will commence the Twenty-Eighth New Zealand Championship meeting. Although, m the usual rotation of meetings it is not Wellington's turn to hold this fixture, the New Zealand Council, after other centres had declined the risk of running the championships) decided, rather than let them lapse, to conduct the. meeting itself, asking the Wellington centre to assist them m running the, sports. Notwithstanding that a number of athletes are away serving -their country at the front, -many of them star performers, capital entries have been received for all events, except the walks. That particular branch' of athletics, howover,.iseldom lattracts,a-,larger1 attracts,a-,larger fleldv'even m handicap races. Each of the five centres are well represented, and although, being the home province, Wellington has a preponderance of men m the field, the quality is good, and, as m other woll-remembered exciting contests on the Basin Reserve, we may yet have to obtain first place m the last event (the quartor hurdles) to retain it. This writer will attempt to anticipate the placing m the various events, but as, with the exception of 440 yards flat, m which Jimmy Wilton will win easily, and the 3-mllc walk, which A. Seivright has now m his pocket, the quality of the other fields aro even, it is no easy matter: 100 yards, Hcley (W), Perkins (O): 220 yards, Martis (W), Edwards (A); 440 yards, Wilton (W), Edwards (A): SSO yards, Crimp (O), Ford (C); one mile, Hcatson (O), Crimp lO); 3-mile run, lieatson (O). Francis (A): one mile walk, Seivright (W), Wilson (O) ; 3 milif walk, Seivright (W), Johnston (W); 120 yards hurdles, Halligan (W), Doyle (W) ; 440 yards hurdle, Cook (C), Wilson <\V); high jump, Doyle (W), ITaylott (S), long jump, Rands (C), Fordham (A); hop, step and jump, Haylett (S), Rands (C); pole vault, Harvey /W),. Ilayiett (S); shot putting, Reid (S), jarrold (\V); hammer throwing, McHolin i\V), Kean IS). ' The points on the above forecast of the result work out as follows: A 8, W 59, G. -16, O 22, S 16; but as the merits of a 'number of the performers arc to n great extent unknown, the calculations here set out are liable, to be upset. Although the executive «re naturally dosirious of n lars:o attendance, of ihe public, there is on this occasion n .special reason why tin- Wellington public sliould be protein m full force. The whole nett proceeds arc to be handed ovar to form a neucleus of a fund for the relief of wounded soldiers, and dependsmtK of killed and wounded of Wellington province I may lie mentioned at the, present time such a fund fs m existence m ench of the other large Xmv Zealand centres.
