Retires from the Ring. From Sydney It is announced that Dave Smith has definitely decided to retire from the ring, though whether this Is his flrst and final retirement remains to be seen. In recent yoars this retiring business has been somewhat overdone. Dave m his valedictory address states: ' "Afterfmuch thought and deliberation, I have decided to quit the game for good, and will look about for other things to do to keep me busy. I have had nine hard years of scrapping, and go out knowing I haven't been beaten by an Australian barring no weight." A Sydney writer m regretting Dave's determination says: "In private life Davo Smith is a credit to the game and himself; a sober, moral, clean living man with a shrewd head and a warm

heart. The only men who don't like Smith are two or three of those he has licked, and among them the bitterest ■ is a newspaper man who was badly • beaten on his prophecy and never for- ' gave Dave for exposing the fatuity of ■ his judgment and his lack of knowledge i of the noble art.
