.In League circles, on Saturday last, football was confined to a trial match at Petonc between A arid B teams,-in ordev to give the selectoro a'final insight Into the capabilities of players best qualified to face the Englishmen to-day.* After a fine exposition of .the game,- played under most, 'favorable conditions; the A team got their heads m front, and won by the narrow- mar-" gin of one point, the score .-at the blow of "all off" being —A team, 13 points; B, 11. Every player was out to do the best that ho was capable of, and the game quickly developed into a ding-dong give-and-take sot-to, each team, m turn, holding a few points' lead. The backs' and forwards on either side played a clean, bright, fast game, that kept 'onlookers on the jump from go to stop. The fortunes of war fluctuated so often that both teams were at the top until time was called. •■•• The A team was the first to open the scoring account, .W. Wilson crossing ovor after a passing rush. The B brigade then got going, and .Strickland and Ashton, between them, quickly put'on eight points. Wilson again came tj; light for the A's, and added three more. Just at half time. Ukitu, one of the B backs, faced over, and made the score:—B, 11; A, 6. In the second half, Whltley put his sido ahead by landing two rattling tries.
