IS THIS UNITY?

Does Not Look Like It.

How Farland is Faring. That real brotherly 1 love which optimists like Professor Mills, Edward Trogear, P. Hickey and others who have thrown their hearts and souis m the Unity of Labor scheme, expected as a result ot the now famous conference, does- not seem to be materialising, and "Truth" can come to no other conclusion but that more than one," "ardent" Laborite doesn't want to be united. When the Labor candidates for the Mayoralty, Council, Hospital and Charitable Aid Board and- the Harbor Board were announced at the beginning •of last month, '-'Truth 'asked, as it had a right to ask, where were those candidates who, at least, would be considered as truly representative of the i Federation of Labor? It pointed out that Mr. G. G. Farland, secretary to the Wellington Wharf Workers' Association, which is affiliated to the Federation of Labor, was a candidate for the Harbor Board, YET ANOTHER LABOR TrCKET was nominated against him. Whether as a result of "Truth's" criticism is not admitted, yet Mr. E. Tregear, who, m addition to Messrs. Hindmarsh, Rcardon and Carey, had been selected by Labor, pulled out, his idea, "Truth" understands, being to give Mr. Farland a chance of being included m the Labor bunch. Now this self-sacrifice is typical of Mr. Tregear. He is genuine m his advocacy of Labor's Cause. Messrs. Young and Bedford declined nomination, their reasons, so it is said, being the same as that of Mr. Tregear's. viz., to give Mr. Farland a chance of receiving United Labor support. The Labor "bosses," however, willed otherwise. A comparatively unknown man, a Mr. Price, has been selected, and thus it win happen, . UNLESS SANITY PREVAILS, that, on the Harbor Board elections at any rate, the Labor vote will be split. As a matter ,of fact. Mr. Farland, as secretary to the wharf workers' union, is entitled to represent the wharf workers on the Board, and the ' tactics pursued to split the Labor vote and to keep the Federation man out of the hunt is not an indication of Labor's brotherly love.
