A Baby's Birth Concealed.

Charge Against Yonng Woman.

On March 15 last, whilst a waitress employed at the Hotel Windsor, Wellington, was searching m a drawer m a. room for a needle, she discovered the body of a female child, and, as the circumstances were unusual, the fact formed the subject of investigation at a Coroner's inquest at the Wellington courthouse on Ihiesday last, before Dr. A. McArthur,, S.fil., Coroner. Dr. Fyffe, m evidence, deposed td holding A POST-MORTEM EXAMINATION on the body at the Morgue on March 18. Besides being newly-born, the child was fully developed, and the body was wrapped m two aprons, some clothing, a sheet, and a towel, on the latter being the name "Windsor," and on one of the aprons the name "Berry." The conditions of the lungs, though diseased, clearly indicated that the child had breathed, but there was an absence of marks of external violence. Except for the congested condition of the brain (probably caused by suffocation at tha time of, or immediately after, birth) there was nothing to show by what manner the child had lost its life. After the Waitress had testified to finding the body, a verdict was returned that the cause of death was suffocation, either during or immediately after birth, but how brought about could not be said. Subsequently Martlm Berry. a young woman, of short but solid build, looking n hit seedy (having just como out of the hospital) was charged with the alleged attempted CONCEALMBNT Of THR HIRTII of the child. On the application of Chief-Detective Hrobcrg. accused was remanded till tVednosday next. April--9 She was -also ordered to make her happy life misery blr w!th Hooth's beilowers at tho Harmy- Horn*.
